Their story

Jim Barry was one of the early pioneers of South Australia's Clare Valley, and he founded his family winery there in 1959. In 1985 his son Peter became managing director, and after Jim's death in 2004 Peter and his own children carried the business forward.

The family's best-known wine comes from the Armagh vineyard, planted to Shiraz in 1968. The Armagh is now counted among Australia's great reds. Over the decades the family grew its holdings across many sites in Clare and added vineyards in Coonawarra.

How it's made

The wines come from the family's own vineyards in the Clare Valley and Coonawarra. The Armagh grows on sandy clay over alluvial pebbles, and Clare's cool nights help the region's Rieslings keep their bright acidity.

Why we carry them

We like Jim Barry for range: a dry, zesty Clare Riesling for weeknights and a Shiraz worth saving for a special dinner.
