Their story
Just Date was started in the San Francisco Bay Area by Dr. Sylvie Charles Royston, a UCSF-trained physician. Her work with diabetic patients, and her own father's diabetes, pushed her to look for a simpler way to sweeten food.
She began by making date syrup at home with a saucepan and cheesecloth. The first bottles sold at independent natural grocers in San Francisco, and Whole Foods later took the sweeteners nationwide.
The brand has since added a date sugar and chocolate chips, which have become a large share of its business.
How it's made
The products are built on dates, including upcycled dates, with very little else added. The chocolate chips use four organic ingredients: upcycled dates, cocoa butter, cacao and oats.
Why we carry them
We keep Just Date syrup around for drizzling on yogurt and stirring into cocktails. It brings a caramel depth that plain sugar does not.
