KAIYO

Japanese whisky matured in Mizunara oak and finished at sea.

Their story

KAIYO is an independent bottler, based in Hong Kong, that works with Japanese whisky. Rather than distilling its own spirit, it buys whisky from producers in Japan and handles the maturing, blending and bottling itself.

The brand's signature idea is the sea. KAIYO means ocean in Japanese, and its whiskies finish their aging on board a ship. The range has grown to include bottlings such as The Signature and a rye.

How it's made

Whisky from Japanese distilleries is aged in Mizunara oak barrels from Ariake, then spends up to three months finishing on a boat. Some bottlings blend malt from more than one distillery.

Why we carry them

We like KAIYO as an approachable way into Mizunara oak, with its spice and sandalwood notes. It makes a good gift for the Japanese whisky fan who has tried the usual names.
