Their story

Kanosuke belongs to Komasa Jyozo, a shochu maker in Kagoshima Prefecture founded in 1883. Yoshitsugu Komasa, the fourth generation to lead the company, built the distillery beside the family's shochu warehouses, looking out over Fukiagehama beach and the East China Sea.

The distillery is named for his grandfather, Kanosuke Komasa, who created Mellowed Kozuru, Japan's first oak-aged shochu, and had once hoped to build on this site. Construction began in 2017, the stills started running that November, and the distillery opened to visitors in 2018.

How it's made

Kanosuke's single malt matures in the warm southern Kyushu climate with sea air rolling in off the beach. The team draws on its shochu roots, using recharred ex-shochu casks among others, with the goal of a mellow house style.

we're aiming to produce a mellow whisky. This is a key concept for us

Why we carry them

We like how Kanosuke's shochu heritage shows up in a soft, rounded single malt. It is a young distillery worth watching.
