Their story

Kilbeggan sits on the River Brosna in County Westmeath, in the middle of Ireland. Matthew MacManus founded the distillery in 1757, and in 1843 John Locke took it over. The Locke family ran it for generations, and the town still associates the place with their name.

Rising taxes forced production to stop in the 1950s, and the site went quiet for decades. Cooley Distillery bought the brand in 1987 and revived it, and distilling returned to Kilbeggan in 2007. A restored waterwheel still turns beside the stillhouse.

Today Kilbeggan is owned by Suntory Global Spirits.

How it's made

Kilbeggan double distills its whiskey in copper pot stills, one of which dates to the early 1800s. Expressions include a blend, a single malt and a small batch rye made from malted barley, barley and about 30 percent rye.

Why we carry them

We like Kilbeggan as an easygoing Irish whiskey with a long story, good neat and just as good in a highball.
