Their story

Tenko is a premium label from Kodama Brewing in Katagami, a rice-growing town in Akita Prefecture near Mt. Taiheizan. The Kodama family started out in 1879 making soy sauce and miso, and began brewing sake in 1913.

Today the brewery is led by Shin-ichiro Kodama, the fifth generation, who took over from his father in 1997. The family describes its guiding idea as tradition and innovation.

How it's made

Tenko is brewed from top-grade Yamadanishiki rice and local spring water. The brewery uses its own take on the traditional kimoto starter method, and Akita's cold winters allow a long, slow fermentation that builds aroma.

Why we carry them

We reach for Tenko when we want a polished, aromatic sake for a special dinner.
