Their story
The Kurayoshi Distillery belongs to Matsui Shuzo, a family of brewers founded in 1910 in Tottori, Japan's least populous prefecture, on the Sea of Japan coast northwest of Kyoto. For most of its history the company made sake and shochu.
The distillery takes its name from the city of Kurayoshi, whose name comes from a phrase meaning "good living." Matsui first built its whisky business by blending and maturing spirits, then earned its own whisky distilling license in 2015. The house goal is simple: whisky everyone can enjoy.
How it's made
Single malt is distilled in-house on two Japanese copper pot stills, with three Portuguese alembic stills used mainly for gin and brandy. Every bottling uses soft, mineral-rich groundwater filtered through the volcanic soil around Mount Daisen. Some pure malt and blended whiskies also include malt and grain whisky from other Japanese producers.
Why we carry them
We think Kurayoshi is a friendly way into Japanese whisky, approachable and smooth, from a family brewery with deep roots in rural Tottori.
