Their story

Bodegas La Cigarrera traces its roots to 1758, when a merchant named Joseph Colóm Darbó leased buildings in Sanlúcar de Barrameda and started a wine business.

In 1891 his successor, Manuel Hidalgo Colóm, acquired the bodega called La Cigarrera, and bringing that name to the manzanilla market marked a boom for the house. The bodega stayed in the family, and in 1990 it passed to María del Pilar García de Velasco Pérez, who handed day-to-day running to her sons, the Hidalgo García de Velasco brothers.

In the US, La Cigarrera is imported by De Maison Selections.

How it's made

Manzanilla is a dry sherry that can only be aged in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where the sea air helps a layer of yeast called flor grow on top of the wine. La Cigarrera ages its manzanilla under flor in a solera system, which blends younger and older wines over time.

Why we carry them

Chilled manzanilla with olives, almonds or jamón is one of our favorite ways to start an evening, and the half bottle is just right for two.
