La Gritona
A single reposado tequila made by one of the industry's few women distillers.
- Based in
- Valle de Guadalupe, Jalisco
Their story
La Gritona, "the screamer," is made by tequilera Melly Barajas at her small distillery in Valle de Guadalupe in the Jalisco highlands. When she started in the industry about 25 years ago, she was one of very few women running a tequila distillery.
The brand came together when two Americans, including Los Angeles punk guitarist Andy Coronado, asked her for a distinctive reposado. Melly built the recipe herself over six months of testing. She is known for hiring and training women at the distillery, from bottling and labeling to running the equipment.
How it's made
La Gritona focuses on a single expression, a reposado tequila made entirely at Melly's distillery. Her team handles each step in-house, from production through bottling and labeling.
Why we carry them
We like La Gritona for sipping tequila with a great story, one bottle, one style, made by a team led by women.
