Their story

La Luna is the mezcal brand of Salvador Chavez, who was born and raised in Sonoma, California, and has family roots in Michoacan. He works on the ground with operations manager Adrian Gallegos, who is based in Morelia.

The brand launched with a single cupreata mezcal from Etucuaro, a center of mezcal making in the state. It has since moved from buying from one producer to running its own vinatas with the Scott and Perez families, who have made mezcal in Michoacan for generations, including younger family members in their 20s.

How it's made

The original cupreata follows the Perez family method, with agave cooked, fermented and distilled twice. Newer bottlings use other agaves, such as tequilana, manso sahuayo and inaequidens, and some ensembles are distilled with fruit like tejocote and guava.

For the longest time it wasn't intended to be a cocktail mezcal

Why we carry them

We like La Luna as a window into Michoacan mezcal, with wild agaves and a different flavor profile than the Oaxacan bottles most people know.
