Their story
La Staffa is the Baldi family winery in Staffolo, a hilltop town of about 2,000 people in the Marche, near the Adriatic. Riccardo Baldi's parents started making wine as a hobby in the early 1990s and soon turned it into a business.
Riccardo helped with harvests as a teen, studied economics, then came back for a vintage with his father, Mario, and decided to stay. Mentored by Lucio Canestrari of Fattoria Coroncino, he now farms about 10 hectares with his father and a partner, with the oldest vines dating to 1972.
How it's made
Riccardo moved the vineyards to organic farming in 2011, earning certification in 2014, and is adding biodynamic practices. The high vineyards sit on clay soils rich in calcium carbonate. Fermentations are spontaneous, in stainless steel and concrete, with long aging on the lees, and his Mai Sentito! is a Verdicchio pet-nat.
my wine tastes like my vineyard.
Why we carry them
We think La Staffa shows how good Verdicchio can be, bright, saline and full of character from a grower to watch.
