Their story

La Tourangelle traces its roots to 1867 and the small oil mills of the Loire Valley, where farmers brought nuts and seeds to be pressed. In the early 1990s the Kohlmeyer family took over a mill there, now based in Saumur and run by Matthieu Kohlmeyer's brother.

In 2002 Matthieu moved to Northern California to recreate the family mill, and the first batch of walnut oil came off the press in Woodland in 2003. Today the company makes oils on both sides of the Atlantic.

How it's made

Nuts and seeds are roasted by hand in cast iron kettles when the oil calls for it, then pressed with a hydraulic press and lightly filtered. Walnut and almond oils, the core of the range, use California nuts from the Central Valley.

It is amazing how a simple ingredient can turn a simple dish into something special.

Why we carry them

We love a drizzle of La Tourangelle roasted walnut or hazelnut oil over salads and roasted vegetables, it adds real depth with almost no effort.
