Their story
Lawless Distilling was started in 2014 by Nathan and Kristen Karnitz and a friend in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis. Nathan first sketched out the business plan while in graduate school at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management.
The name nods to the neighborhood's Prohibition past, when small illegal bars called tippling houses operated out of homes and back rooms. In 2016 the distillery opened a cocktail room, pouring drinks straight from taps.
How it's made
The team distills vodka, gin, rum and whiskey along with a range of liqueurs on site in Minneapolis. Their juniper-forward gin is the best seller, and their fernet is an 80-proof Italian-style digestif made with 23 botanicals.
Why we carry them
We like Lawless for its sense of fun and its range beyond the usual craft gin. The fernet is worth a try for anyone who enjoys a bitter after-dinner pour.
