Their story
Le Machin is a small label from Mike Roth and Craig Winchester, the same pair behind Lo-Fi Wines, which they started in 2012. Roth trained at biodynamic estates in Santa Barbara County and has also made wine at Coquelicot Estate in Los Olivos.
With Le Machin, the two turn their attention to Burgundy's classic grapes grown in Santa Barbara County. The lineup includes Pinot Noir from the Sta. Rita Hills and the wider county, a Chardonnay, and a Pinot Noir and Gamay blend in the style of a Burgundian Passe-Tout-Grains.
How it's made
Fruit comes from certified organic vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills and around Santa Barbara County. Fermentations use only native yeasts, with no added tannin and little or no sulfur, and the wines rest in neutral vessels so no oak flavor shows.
Why we carry them
We like Le Machin for its fresh, transparent take on California Pinot Noir. It is a good bottle for anyone who finds bigger California reds too heavy.
