Their story

Weingut Jürgen Leiner is a family estate in the southern Pfalz, near the village of Ilbesheim and the edge of the Pfälzerwald forest, about half an hour north of the Alsace border. Sven Leiner makes the wines today and has been shortlisted by Falstaff as one of Germany's best winemakers.

The estate was certified organic in 2005 and went straight on to biodynamic farming. In 2011 it earned Demeter certification without a transition period, and it is a member of the Respekt-BIODYN group of biodynamic growers.

How it's made

The family farms 18 hectares of Riesling and Burgundian varieties on loess, loam and limestone, with red sandstone under the Pinot Noir. Sven ferments with native yeasts and experiments with extended lees and skin contact; the Rieslings are made in steel, while the Spätburgunder ages in large old casks.

Why we carry them

We like Leiner for German wine that feels alive and unfussy. Their Pinot varieties are a good way to see what the Pfalz can do beyond Riesling.
