Their story

Seyssel sits on the Rhône in the Savoie Alps, and its sparkling wines have a long history. The Royal Seyssel label was started in 1901 by the Varichon and Clerc families, and Seyssel earned its appellation status in 1942.

When the local winery closed, Gerard and Catherine Lambert and Olivier Varichon bought back the Royal Seyssel name in 2007 and brought the wines back to life under Caves de Seyssel.

How it's made

The wines are built on two local grapes, Molette and Altesse, also called Roussette. They are made by the traditional method with a second fermentation in bottle and rest at least two years on the lees before disgorgement. The Petit Royal blends roughly 60% Molette with 40% Altesse.

Why we carry them

We like Seyssel as a crisp, mountain-fresh alternative to Champagne. It is a great aperitif and pairs well with Alpine cheeses.
