Their story
Les Lunes was founded in 2014 by Diego Roig and Shaunt Oungoulian, who met at UC Davis. Before that, Shaunt worked a harvest in Anderson Valley and apprenticed in Burgundy and Beaujolais with natural winemakers.
The pair built their own cellar in Richmond, in the East Bay hills, which lets them hold wines for several years before release. They also make a sister label, Populis, with fresh, early-drinking wines from longtime Mendocino growers.
How it's made
Roig and Oungoulian lease and farm more than 20 hectares in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino, all certified organic or in conversion. Fermentations use native yeasts, wines rest in neutral oak or tanks, sulfur is used sparingly or not at all, and nothing is fined or filtered.
