Their story
Los Javis is a family-run palenque in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, the town often called the mezcal capital of the world. The name is a nod to the family's three Javiers: grandfather, father and son.
The palenque itself was built in 1979, and Javier Senior passed the craft and its traditions down to his family. In 2003 Javier Mateo and his wife launched the Los Javis brand, with a promise to plant and harvest the best agave they could.
Today the family still owns and runs the distillery, bottling a range that runs from everyday espadín to wild agaves.
How it's made
The family grows and harvests its own agave and distills at its palenque in Santiago Matatlán. Alongside cultivated espadín, they bottle mezcals from wild and semi-wild agaves such as tobalá, tepeztate and cerrudo.
Why we carry them
We like Los Javis because it is a true family palenque, and the range lets you taste how much the agave itself changes the spirit. The espadín is a friendly place to start.
