Their story

Los Nahuales is the name used in the United States for the mezcals of Los Danzantes, a brand that grew out of the Los Danzantes restaurant in Oaxaca. The same group is behind the Alipús line of village mezcals. Trademark issues meant the mezcal needed a different name for the American market.

Los Danzantes means "the dancers," and the labels and artwork pay tribute to the indigenous dance traditions of the region. The brand has been making mezcal since 1997.

The mezcals are distilled at the group's own Destilería Los Danzantes in Santiago Matatlán, the small town south of Oaxaca city at the heart of mezcal country.

How it's made

Production takes place at Destilería Los Danzantes in Santiago Matatlán. The range centers on espadín, with bottlings from wild agaves such as tobalá and jabalí, plus rested reposado and añejo expressions and special editions.

Why we carry them

We like Los Nahuales for its range: you can taste a clean young espadín next to a barrel-rested mezcal from the same distillery. It is a good way to learn the category.
