Their story
Lundberg Family Farms began in 1937, when Albert and Frances Lundberg left their wheat and corn farm in Nebraska in the hard years after the Great Depression and moved to Richvale, California. Albert found that the heavy clay soil on their 40 acres suited rice far better than anything they had grown back home.
Albert farmed with the soil in mind. Rather than burn the leftover rice straw like his neighbors, he worked it back into the fields. His four sons, Wendell, Eldon, Harlan and Homer, later built their own mill and became the first American farmers to market an organic rice brand.
The business is still owned by the Lundberg family, now run by Albert and Frances's grandchildren, and has grown to include rice cakes and other grain foods.
How it's made
Lundberg manages around 14,000 acres in the Sacramento Valley, both its own land and that of partner growers, with most of it farmed organically. The company grows, mills, packs and ships its own rice. It has run on renewable power and was recognized by the EPA for it in 2004.
Why we carry them
We keep Lundberg on the shelf because it is a California family farm that got organic rice right decades before it was common. Their rice is a dependable pantry staple.
