Their story
This wine comes from Louis-Antoine Luyt, a Burgundy native who arrived in Chile in 1998 at 22 for a three-month trip and never left. He started out washing dishes in a restaurant, worked his way up to wine buyer, and then went back to France to learn winemaking, including five harvests with Mathieu Lapierre in Beaujolais.
He made his first Chilean wines in 2006 and has since become one of the best-known voices for País, the grape Spanish missionaries brought to Chile in the 1500s. He works with very old vines across the Maule, Itata and Bío Bío regions in the south.
Rather than own large vineyards, Luyt partners with about 14 small farming families and bottles their fruit parcel by parcel.
How it's made
The vines are dry farmed, many plowed by horse, and some are a few centuries old. Grapes are hand-harvested, often crushed by foot, and fermented with native yeasts in open-top vats, steel or fiberglass. Each grower's parcel is made separately, and no sulfur is added.
Why we carry them
We carry Luyt because these wines taste like a part of Chile most people never see. The País is light, bright and perfect with a slight chill.
