Madhava

Colorado honey and agave sweeteners that grew from a 1970s farm commune.

Their story

Madhava started as the honey business of a farm commune near Longmont, Colorado. When the commune was breaking up in the mid-1970s, a young University of Colorado graduate named Craig Gerbore was recruited to make deliveries and run operations, and he ended up leading the company for 34 years.

In those early days, local beekeepers brought their honey in 55-gallon drums each fall, and Madhava strained and bottled it. In the early 2000s the company used the same equipment and know-how to move into agave nectar, which became a big part of its business, later adding coconut sugar and pancake mix.

When Gerbore retired in 2010, the company was acquired by Greenmount Capital of Boulder.

How it's made

Madhava's honey is strained rather than pressure filtered, which keeps more of the natural pollen in the jar. The honey line included light clover, amber alfalfa and dark wildflower styles, and the agave nectar is made with the same gentle approach.

Why we carry them

We like Madhava as a simple pantry sweetener from a Colorado company with real roots. The agave is handy for cocktails and iced tea.
