Their story
Madre is made with the Garcia Morales family on their ranch in San Dionisio, Oaxaca. Uncles and cousins in the family plant, harvest and distill the agave.
The brand was founded in 2016 by Tony Farfalla, an artist, his childhood friend Stefan Wigand, and partners Davide Berruto and Chris Stephenson. They first visited the family without any plan to start a business, and the partnership grew from that friendship.
Madre means mother, a nod to the land the agave comes from and the people who make the mezcal.
How it's made
The family plants, cuts and blesses the agave, a blend of espadín and wild cuishe. Hearts are roasted in an earthen pit and fermented with wild yeast before family members oversee distillation. The recipe took three years to settle.
Why we carry them
We like Madre for its gentle smoke and herbal lift from the cuishe. It is an easy mezcal to sip or mix.
