Mal De Amor Mezcal
A family-owned mezcal from the Zapotec Hernández brothers of Santiago Matatlán.
- Founded by
- Hernández brothers

- Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
Their story
Mal de Amor is made by the Zapotec Hernández brothers in Santiago Matatlán, the Oaxacan town that calls itself the world capital of mezcal. Their family palenque sits along the road through town, where travelers stop in to taste.
The brand is owned by the family that makes it. Through a partnership with Ilegal Mezcal, the palenque has grown to include agave fields, a shop, a restaurant and tours.
How it's made
The family distills a range of single-agave and blended mezcals, from Espadín to wild varieties like Tobalá, Madrecuishe, Tepextate and Sierrudo. Each bottling reflects the agave used and the family's own methods at their Matatlán distillery.
Why we carry them
We like Mal de Amor because the people who make it also own it. Try a wild agave bottling to taste what Matatlán does best.
