Mala Idea
Traditional Matatlán mezcal, from Espadín to wild Tobalá and Tepextate.

- Oaxaca
Their story
Mala Idea is a mezcal from Santiago Matatlán in Oaxaca, made by mezcalero Celestino Sernas.
The range runs from Espadín and an ensamble to wild agaves like Tobalá, Cuishe and Tepextate, plus a rested añejo and a capon Espadín made from plants left to mature longer before harvest.
How it's made
The agave is roasted in an underground stone oven, crushed with a stone tahona, fermented in open air and distilled in copper stills. Some bottlings, like the Cuishe, are double distilled.
Why we carry them
We like Mala Idea as a classic, well-made Oaxacan mezcal. The Espadín is a good place to start before moving on to the wild agaves.
