Their story

Salt has been made around Maldon, on the Essex coast, since at least the time of the Domesday survey. The Maldon Salt Company itself dates to 1882, and it has stayed with one family ever since.

James Osborne passed the business to his son Cyril and grandson Clive, and today his great-grandson Steve leads it. Maldon has been sold abroad since the 1950s, now reaches more than 55 countries and holds a Royal Warrant.

How it's made

Seawater is drawn from the Blackwater Estuary, filtered and slowly heated so that crystals form on the surface and grow into hollow pyramid-shaped flakes. The flakes are harvested by hand with rakes, a process that depends on careful control of heat and timing.

Why we carry them

We keep Maldon on hand for finishing just about anything, from steak to chocolate chip cookies. That crunch is hard to beat.
