Their story
Marie Bérénice is a top cuvée from Domaine de la Madone, the Bérerd family estate in Le Perréon in the Beaujolais. The family names its best bottlings after relatives, and the estate is run today by brothers Olivier and Bruno Bérerd.
The domaine dates to the 1940s. In the 1960s the brothers' father was already making characterful wines with carbonic maceration and no added sulfites, and the family has farmed sustainably from the start.
How it's made
The Gamay comes from some of the highest vineyards in the region, steep slopes of decomposed pink granite much like neighboring Fleurie, with many vines over 100 years old. Grapes are certified organic and picked by hand, fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, and aged in tank and used oak.
Why we carry them
We like this bottling for Beaujolais with more depth than you'd expect at the Villages level. It drinks like a cru and is easy to pair with dinner.
