Their story

Stephen Gaspare Martinelli left Switzerland for California in the late 1850s and settled in Watsonville, in the apple country of the Pajaro Valley. He had learned to make sparkling wine in France, and in 1868 he began pressing apples from his brother Luigi's farm into cider.

His sparkling cider won a gold medal at the 1890 California State Fair, and the business has stayed in the family ever since. S. Martinelli & Company is still privately owned by the founder's descendants, now in its fifth generation, and still based in Watsonville.

How it's made

Martinelli's presses apples grown in the United States, with a long history of buying from Pajaro Valley orchards. The juices and sparkling ciders are pure apple juice without added sugar, bottled in the company's familiar apple-shaped and classic glass bottles.

Why we carry them

We keep Martinelli's on hand for every holiday table where not everyone is drinking. It's a California original from just down the coast.
