Their story
Marumoto Brewery sits at the foot of the Chikurin-ji mountains in Okayama Prefecture, one of Japan's richest farming regions. It opened in 1867 under the name Shimizu-ya, "spring water store," built over a good water source, and the old buildings are now a recognized cultural landmark.
The brewery is run by the sixth generation of the Marumoto family. Its Chikurin label, introduced in 1990, is sold in Japan through a small, hand-picked group of retailers.
How it's made
Marumoto calls itself a farmers' brewery: the people who grow the rice also brew the sake. It farms its own Yamada Nishiki rice rather than buying from brokers, and was the first Japanese brewer-farmer to earn USDA Organic certification for its Yamada Nishiki.
Why we carry them
We love that Chikurin is sake made by farmers from their own fields. It's fresh and relaxed, and a good place to start if you're new to sake.
