Their story
Masseria Li Veli is an old farm estate in Cellino San Marco, in the province of Brindisi on the Salento peninsula. It was first built up in the late 1800s by Marquis Antonio De Viti de Marco.
In 1999 the Falvo family, known in Tuscany for founding Avignonesi and championing Vino Nobile and Vin Santo di Montepulciano, restored the masseria with a group of partners. Brothers Edoardo and Alfredo Falvo became sole owners in 2008 and have focused the estate on Puglia's own grapes, including some nearly forgotten ones like Susumaniello.
How it's made
About 50 hectares of vines are planted only to traditional Apulian varieties such as Negroamaro, Primitivo, Susumaniello and Verdeca, on clay, limestone and sandy soils near the sea. Wines ferment in French oak vats or temperature-controlled steel and age in steel, large oak or barrique, in cellars with traditional stone star vaults.
Why we carry them
We like Li Veli for showing how good Puglia's native grapes can be. The Susumaniello is a fun bottle to put in front of someone who thinks they've tried everything.
