Their story
Matthieu Barret farms his family's vineyards, Domaine du Coulet, on the Terre Brûlée hillside above the village of Cornas. He settled at the estate in 1998, stopped selling grapes to the cooperative, and released his first wines under his own name in 2001.
Today the family holding covers about 16 hectares, most of it terraced Cornas Syrah, plus white grapes for Côtes du Rhône and parcels in Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. One of his Cornas bottlings, La Géniale Patronne, is named for his wife.
How it's made
The vineyards have been farmed organically and biodynamically since the early 2000s on decomposed granite soils, with low yields. Grapes move by gravity, are pressed gently, and the wines are aged in egg-shaped tanks and older large barrels, then bottled unfined and unfiltered with sulfur kept to a minimum.
Why we carry them
We like Barret for Syrah that's pure and energetic rather than heavy. His Cornas is a great way into one of France's most serious red appellations.
