Mayalen
Handmade Guerrero mezcal from wild cupreata agave and a family tradition.
- Based in
- Mochitlán, Guerrero
Their story
Mayalen comes from Mochitlán, a town in the mountains of Guerrero in southern Mexico. The mezcal is made under the eye of maestro mezcalero José Morales Uribe, known locally as Don José, who oversees every stage of production.
Mezcal making in his family goes back to 1949, and the knowledge has been handed down from one generation to the next. Mayalen bottles that tradition in expressions such as Guerrero and Borrego, both made from agave cupreata, a variety native to the region.
How it's made
Mayalen focuses on wild agave, especially cupreata, which grows in the hills of Guerrero. Production is done entirely by hand, with Don José supervising every stage using methods passed down in his family.
Why we carry them
Guerrero mezcal is less familiar than Oaxacan bottles, and we think Mayalen is a great place to start. Sip it neat to taste what cupreata brings.
