Their story

Michter's began as a Pennsylvania whiskey brand with roots reaching back to 1753. The original distillery went bankrupt and had fully closed by 1990.

In 1997 Joseph Magliocco, then running Chatham Imports, bought the abandoned Michter's trademark for $245. It came with no whiskey or recipes, just the name. He started with sourced 10-year-old rye and bourbon, selling only 150 bottles in the first year, and on the advice of whiskey veteran Dick Newman moved the brand to Kentucky.

Michter's opened its own distillery in Shively, outside Louisville, around 2014 and stopped sourcing whiskey in 2015. In 2019 it opened the restored Fort Nelson building on Louisville's Whiskey Row as a small distillery, visitor center and bar.

How it's made

Michter's fills its barrels at 103 proof, well under the 125 proof the law allows. The team believes the lower entry proof gives a richer, sweeter and more complex whiskey after aging.

Why we carry them

The US*1 Bourbon and Rye are bottles we keep coming back to for a reliably rich pour. Try the rye in a Manhattan.
