Their story

Modern Sprout was started by Sarah Burrows and Nick Behr, who wanted to make indoor gardening less complicated. Their kits are assembled in Chicago, the founders' hometown.

The line covers simple seed kits, drop-in plant starters, self-watering hydroponic planters, and tree starter kits that plant two trees for each one sold. The company works with groups including American Forests, Heartland Alliance, and Pollinator Partnership.

How it's made

Seeds and growing media come from organic, non-GMO sources, and the organic materials are grown in the US. Some pots are made from upcycled cow manure that breaks down and feeds the soil, and planters use reusable recycled glass.

Why we carry them

These kits make an easy gift for cooks who want fresh herbs on the windowsill. We like that they skip the plastic and the fuss.
