Their story
Montagave was started in 2020 by John and Lucie Melvin, a husband-and-wife team. They make their tequila in El Arenal, Jalisco, in partnership with the respected Cascahuín distillery.
The range starts with blanco tequilas and extends into bottlings rested in unusual vessels, including a large concrete egg and casks that once held French wine.
How it's made
Mature valley agave comes from farming families around El Arenal. It is cooked in brick ovens, crushed by mill, given a long fermentation, and distilled in pot stills. The spirit is brought down to proof before going into the barrel, and aging vessels include a five-ton concrete egg and casks from Bordeaux, Sauternes, and Burgundy.
Why we carry them
Montagave is a good bottle for tequila fans who want to see how much the vessel shapes the spirit. Sip it neat to get the full picture.
