Their story
Monte Bernardi sits near Panzano, a village in the heart of the Chianti Classico zone in Tuscany. Winemaker Michael Schmelzer runs the estate and has made it one of the area's most respected small producers.
The wines focus on Sangiovese and the traditional Chianti style, with bottlings such as Retromarcia made for everyday drinking.
How it's made
The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, with an interest in older, pre-industrial methods. For Retromarcia, grapes are destemmed and macerated for about three weeks in concrete with punch-downs by hand, then aged 18 months in large casks, concrete, and used barrels. The wine is bottled unfiltered with very little sulfur.
Why we carry them
Monte Bernardi shows how bright and food-friendly Chianti Classico can be. We like it with pasta, roast chicken, or anything with tomatoes.
