Their story

Mortalis was started by brothers-in-law Paul Grenier and Dave Luckenbach, who learned to brew together in a Rochester garage and later a basement. Josh Bauerlein is also part of the ownership group. The name is Latin for mortal, a nod to the idea that they are regular people making beer.

The brewery opened in 2018 in Avon, in Livingston County, after the team built the place largely by hand, starting from a bare building in the middle of a cornfield. Early beers ranged from cream ales to New England IPAs before the focus shifted to double IPAs, imperial stouts and the Hydra series of smoothie sours. The brewery has since added taprooms elsewhere in New York.

How it's made

Mortalis brews on a five-barrel brewhouse feeding a cellar of larger fermenters. The Hydra sours lean heavily on fruit, and the team has worked with around a dozen fruit suppliers to get the ripeness and flavor they want.

Mortalis is the Latin word for mortal, and we are all mortals

Why we carry them

If you think of sour beer as thin and tart, a Hydra will change your mind. These are thick, fruit-forward beers best shared and sipped slowly.
