Their story
Mother Rock is a partnership between South African winemaker Johan Meyer and Ben Henshaw, founder of the UK importer Indigo Wine. Meyer is one of the familiar names in the Cape's newer wave of low-intervention winemakers.
The wines carry the Swartland name. Meyer has since bought land at Piketberg, in the north of the region, where he built a winery and planted vines on a cooler, higher site.
How it's made
Meyer buys fruit from carefully farmed vineyards across the Cape, chosen for their different soils. In the cellar he keeps things as simple as possible, aiming for wines that show their site and are easy to drink. At Piketberg he planted Rhone varieties on the warmer slope and Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the cooler one.
Why we carry them
Mother Rock is a great way into the lively side of South African wine. Bottles like Force Celeste Semillon are bright, fresh and made to be opened, not cellared.
