Nacional 1938
Artisanal Oaxacan mezcal named for Mexico's 1938 oil nationalization.
Their story
Nacional 1938 is an ensamble from Mezcal Nacional, made in Oaxaca by mezcalero Celso Martinez Lopez. The name looks back to 1938, the year Mexico nationalized its oil and gas reserves, and the label carries an oil derrick as a nod to that history.
It is bottled as Mezcal Artesanal, the category for mezcal made with traditional hand methods.
How it's made
The blend uses Espadin and Cirial agaves, which are roasted with mesquite in an underground conical oven and crushed with a horse-drawn tahona. The mash ferments with wild yeast in open pine vats and is double distilled in a copper still, then bottled at 46.2 percent.
Why we carry them
This is a lovely way to taste how two agaves work together, with gentle smoke and a lot of character. Sip it neat to get the full picture.
