Their story
Neptune began as OneForNeptune, the project of marine scientist Nick Mendoza, who has a master's degree in sustainable aquaculture. After years in Monterey, California, he was spending time on his family's cattle ranch in New Mexico when he started thinking about jerky and the problems he had seen in the seafood business.
Mendoza launched the company in the fall of 2018 with cofounders Garrett Delgado and James Coop, funded the first run through Kickstarter, and later moved the operation to Seattle. The brand has since been renamed Neptune.
How it's made
Neptune works with wild-caught U.S. rockfish from small West Coast fisheries, buying undersized fish and undervalued cuts that tend to be overlooked. Mendoza developed the recipes in his home kitchen and refined them at a food lab in Portland, and a manufacturer south of Seattle now makes the jerky.
It was problems in seafood that I'd been turning over in my head
Why we carry them
If you like jerky but want something lighter than beef, this is worth a try. We also like that it puts overlooked fish to good use.
