Their story
The Nielson label takes its name from the Nielson Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley, planted by Uriel Nielson in 1964 and often described as Santa Barbara County's first commercial vineyard. The vineyard surrounds the Byron winery, which sits on the site of Nielson's original plantings, and the wines are sold as Nielson by Byron.
The property has changed hands over the years, including a period under the Mondavi family, when part of the vineyard was replanted in 2000. Today the Nielson wines are associated with Jackson Family Wines.
How it's made
The vineyard sits on a windy bench in the Santa Maria Valley, with thin sandy loam soils and cool ocean air that suits Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wines draw on that estate fruit along with other Santa Barbara County sites.
Why we carry them
We like pouring Nielson for anyone curious about Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir. It comes from one of the area's founding vineyards.
