Their story
Niepoort was founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius Niepoort, a Dutch merchant who settled in Porto. The family has run the house ever since, with the fifth generation, Dirk Niepoort, leading it today and his children coming up behind him.
For most of its history Niepoort bought grapes and aged Port in its cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. When Dirk joined his father Rolf in 1987, he began buying vineyards in the Douro and making dry red and white wines, starting with Redoma in 1991. He went on to make wine in other Portuguese regions and abroad, and helped found the Douro Boys group in 2003.
How it's made
Niepoort farms about 62 hectares of organic vineyards at Quinta de Napoles and Quinta do Carril in the Cima Corgo, including old vines. The dry wines are made in a cellar at Quinta de Napoles, while Port is made separately at Vale de Mendiz in granite lagares, and some Ports age in glass demijohns after time in wood.
Why we carry them
Whether you want a tawny for after dinner or a Douro red for the table, Niepoort is a family house we trust to deliver. Their Ports are a great place to start.
