Their story

Nuun began with long bike rides. Tim Moxey, then a student at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, kept finding nothing worth drinking at the country stores along his 100-mile routes, so he worked on his own formula in an entrepreneurship class.

He founded Nuun in 2004, and business partner Laura Hughes joined in 2006. The company, based in Seattle, became known as the first to separate electrolyte replacement from carbohydrates, so its drinks skip the heavy sugar of classic sports drinks.

Nuun has since grown from sports hydration into everyday drinks and is now part of Nestlé Health Science.

How it's made

Nuun presses electrolytes and flavor into quarter-sized tablets that fizz and dissolve in a glass or bottle of water. Keeping carbohydrates out of the formula means less sugar, and the dry tablets are light and easy to pack.

Why we carry them

We like keeping a tube of Nuun in a gym bag or glove box. It makes water a little more interesting without a sugary drink.
