Their story
Oban Distillery sits right in the middle of Oban, a port town on Scotland's west coast. Brothers John and Hugh Stevenson founded it in 1794, before the town had really grown up around it, and their family ran it until 1866.
The distillery has had quiet spells, closing from 1931 to 1937 and again from 1969 to 1972 while a new still house was built. Today it is owned by Diageo, and its 14-year-old has been part of the Classic Malts Selection since 1988.
How it's made
Oban works with just two pot stills, among the smallest in Scotland, and draws its water from two lochs in Ardconnel. The spirit lands between the smoky island malts and the lighter, sweeter Highland style. The Distiller's Edition gets a second finish in Montilla Fino sherry casks.
Why we carry them
We think Oban 14 is a great bridge for anyone moving from gentle Highland malts toward the smokier side. It has a touch of sea air, fruit and a whisper of smoke.
