Their story

Obsidian Ridge is a Molnar family project. The family's roots in California wine go back to Nicholas Molnar, a Hungarian refugee who left his homeland in 1956 and later began buying vineyard land in Napa Valley.

In 1999 the family planted a vineyard high in the Red Hills of Lake County, at about 2,640 feet near the Clear Lake volcanic field. While preparing the site, crews found big chunks of black obsidian glass in the ground, and the name followed.

How it's made

The grapes grow in volcanic soils at high elevation, where strong sunlight and cool nights produce small berries with thick skins. The Molnar family's other wines are aged in Hungarian oak from a cooperage the family owns.

You have a lot of UV that is bouncing off the obsidian because it is glass.

Why we carry them

We like Obsidian Ridge for Cabernet with real structure. It is a good way to taste what Lake County's mountain vineyards can do.
