Their story

Old Grand-Dad was created in 1882 by Raymond B. Hayden, a third-generation Kentucky distiller, as a tribute to his grandfather Basil Hayden Sr. Basil's portrait still appears on the label beneath the words "The Grand Daddy of Bourbon."

The brand changed hands several times over the years. During Prohibition the Wathen family sold it as medicinal whiskey, and today it belongs to Suntory Global Spirits, the owner of Jim Beam.

Basil Hayden's, a separate bourbon created much later by Booker Noe, borrows the same family name.

How it's made

Old Grand-Dad uses a high-rye mash bill, around 27 percent rye compared with the 8 to 10 percent in many bourbons, for a spicier profile. It comes in three strengths: 80 proof, a 100 proof bottled-in-bond and a 114 proof.

Why we carry them

We point fans of spicy bourbon to Old Grand-Dad, especially the bonded and 114 bottlings. It is a classic that over-delivers for the price.
