Their story
Old Potrero is named for Potrero Hill, the San Francisco neighborhood where Fritz Maytag, already famous for reviving Anchor Brewing, founded Anchor Distilling in 1993. It is often called one of the very first American craft whiskeys.
Maytag set out to make rye the old way, and early releases ranged from a young one-year-old to a three-year-old straight rye, later joined by 18th Century and 19th Century style bottlings. In 2006 he added Hotaling's, an early bottled-in-bond craft whiskey.
Maytag sold the company in 2010, and in 2018 Anchor Distilling was renamed Hotaling & Co.
How it's made
Old Potrero is made entirely from malted rye and distilled in a pot still, a recipe Maytag originally labeled single malt rye. The whiskey is released in several styles and ages.
Why we carry them
We love that one of the first craft whiskeys in the country came from just across town. Its all-malted-rye recipe gives a rich, bready spice you won't find in most ryes.
