Their story
Origen 35 is a whiskey from Oaxaca, Mexico, a state better known for mezcal. It is distilled by master distiller Isidoro Krassel and is built around the native corn grown in the region.
The range includes expressions made from purple bolita corn as well as a cristalino and an aged version, each one a way of showing how Oaxacan maize tastes once it is malted and distilled.
How it's made
The corn is harvested and shelled by hand, then malted on palm mats called petates for 10 to 15 days until it sprouts. The kernels are toasted on a clay comal, milled and mixed with spring water, then fermented with wild yeast in open vats for about a week. It is distilled on a 12-plate column still and charcoal filtered for 48 hours.
Why we carry them
We like Origen 35 for anyone curious about Mexican whiskey. The native corn gives it a character you will not find in bourbon.
