Their story
Original Pattern is a neighborhood brewery in Oakland's Jack London District, set in an old brick and timber warehouse on 4th Street. It was started by Ryan Frank, previously director of brewery operations at 21st Amendment, along with his wife Caitlin O'Connor and friends Max and Margie Silverstein.
Frank met the Silversteins while studying brewing at the Siebel Institute and World Brewing Academy in Chicago and Munich, and met O'Connor on a trip to Prague. They broke ground in 2017. Today the taproom is a busy, roomy spot with live music, a pop-up kitchen and a dog-friendly patio.
How it's made
The beers are brewed on a 20-hectoliter system and draw on Belgian, German, English, Irish and American traditions, with room for beers that ignore style rules. The brewery keeps a rotating tap list for freshness and runs a barrel-aging and sour program on site.
Opening a brewery has been a long-time dream of all of ours.
Why we carry them
We like having Original Pattern close to home. Their range runs from crisp lagers to hazy IPAs, so there is a can for almost anyone.
