Their story
Peay Vineyards is a first-generation family winery in the northwestern corner of the Sonoma Coast, about four miles from the Pacific. Nick Peay farms the vineyard and his wife, Vanessa Wong, formerly winemaker at Peter Michael, makes the wine. Nick's brother Andy runs the business side.
The family started the project in 1996, planted their first vines in 1998 and added more in 2001 and 2008. Their first vintage was 2002.
How it's made
Every wine comes from the 54-acre estate, planted to Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay and a few Rhone whites. The vineyard is farmed organically, runs equipment on biodiesel and uses solar power for vineyard and winery. A small share of the fruit is sold to other wineries.
Why we carry them
We reach for Peay when we want to show how cool and coastal California wine can taste. Their Syrah in particular is savory and lively.
